Candidiasis in pigeons
Fungi are ubiquitous, in all forms. Let's do an experiment: leave a Sabouraud-agar medium uncovered in a room, then place it in an incubator. After a period, we will observe a true fungal arrangement. But not all fungi are pathogenic. Pigeons can contract pathogenic fungi or yeasts.
CANDIDIASIS is caused by Candida albicans. It generally appears in young birds and birds affected by other pre-existing diseases (trichomoniasis, avitaminosis, antibiotic abuse).
Affected pigeons do not necessarily show signs of the disease. It waits for the body to weaken before acting and developing. Pigeons are listless, have no appetite, breathe with difficulty, reduce their flying capacity, or even worse, do not get into shape. The nostrils can be blocked with a whitish discharge. In the oral cavity, whitish deposits with a cheesy, chalky appearance may appear.
In addition to localizations in the oral cavity, lesions can be found in the esophagus, crop, intestine, liver, and trachea.
Often, breeders notice that something is wrong with their birds and start treating, but the big mistake is that they don't treat for candidiasis. Incorrect treatments are one of the main causes of intestinal candidiasis.
For diagnosis, microscopic examination of the scraping or culture on Sabouraud agar is used. Pay attention to the differential diagnosis with diphtheriovariola, trichomoniasis, and avitaminosis A.
As treatment, the most effective active substances are Nystatin and ketoconazole. Our product Fungi Stop contains nystatin and effectively fights candidiasis. It is associated with AminoForte to provide the body with all the necessary substances in the fight against the disease.
Let's not forget about microclimate factors, fresh and clean water, air currents, and humidity. The best treatment is prevention!
