Once both adult and young birds have started their training and competition program, they may develop an ornithosis problem, showing symptoms of swollen or puffed-up feathers around the ears, dry plumage, bruised flesh, and defective feathers after molting. 60% of young birds will develop ornithosis problems, leading to increased losses. Pigeons will come home very tired after races when they show these symptoms. Pigeons should be treated directly with a combination of prescribed treatments and should be kept home in more severe cases for at least a week to avoid even greater losses.
